Role Summary
Reporting to the grounds supervisor and engineering leadership team, the grounds lead is responsible for assisting with overseeing the daily operations of the grounds team. This role assists with the coordination of the day to day maintenance and upkeep of hotel grounds, interior plants and other plant materials on property in a fresh, neat, healthy and presentable condition.
Accountabilities
- Responsible for maintaining the hotel grounds including lawn care maintenance, irrigation, horticulture knowledge, landscaping design, pruning techniques, weed and pest control and equipment maintenance
- Maintain lawns by mowing, edging, raking leaves, and performing other lawn maintenance functions
- Wash, clean, and re-fuel all equipment after use
- Maintain flower beds, baskets, and boxes by watering, removing weeds, trimming, and performing other maintenance
- Ensure all beds, lawns and plantings are properly watered, fertilized and cared for in such a manner as to promote healthy growth
- Remove and bag garbage from all exterior trash cans
- Uphold the appearance of fountains, planters, or other grounds features by cleaning, replacing or making repairs
- Maintain the appearance and safety of sidewalks, driveways, cart paths, or parking lots by filling in cracks, holes, and making other repairs
- Operate tractors, trucks, or utility vehicles to transport equipment and supplies
- Assist with the coordination of outside contractors or internal assistance that may be needed
- Ensure quality of work and compliance with our safety policies and procedures
- Train and instruct other members of the team by passing along knowledge and skills to assist them in their development
- Provide leadership and support to the team
- Walk the grounds on a daily basis to ensure clean up and job assignments are being followed
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas throughout the day, practicing clean-as-you-go procedures
- Welcome and acknowledge each and every guest with a smile, eye contact and a friendly verbal greeting using the guests’ names when possible
- Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the health and safety program
- Adhere to all environmental policies and programs as required
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, safety awareness information, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports, keep logs and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively with guests and associates
- Knowledge of Toro irrigation system and herbicides and fertilizers and insecticide licensing
- High school certificate and four years’ experience in a groundskeeping role
- Post-secondary education in horticulture an asset
- Have and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license
Working Conditions
- Must be able to work in hot, humid, cold environments
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
- Required to move, lift, carry, pull and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance
- Stand, sit or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire shift
- Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting and pulling
- Move through narrow, confined or elevated spaces
- Move up and down a ladder
- Move over sloping, uneven or slippery surfaces
