Uplifting Communities: Honouring Charities and Non-Profits That Help Us Shine On
By Vimal Vyas, Chief Financial Officer, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka
At the YMCA, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to thrive — no matter their age, background, or circumstances. And while many people know us for our pools, camps, and child care centres, fewer realize this: the YMCA is a charity. That means every program we run — from swim lessons to job support — is made possible by the generosity of our community. In everything we do, the YMCA is here for people over profit, and to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families across our region.
A Moment to Reflect
As we move through National Non-Profit Day (August 17) and approach the International Day of Charity (September 5), we’re reflecting on what it really means to be part of this work.
We believe that charities and non-profits are the heart of every community — filling the gaps where other systems can’t always reach and offering support, connection, and hope when it’s needed most. Every day at the Y, life-changing moments happen: a child learns to swim, a newcomer builds their first connection, a parent finds safe and supportive child care so they can return to work. These moments may seem small, but together they create stronger, healthier communities for all.
And they’re only possible because people like you believe in what we do.
You may hear the terms charity and non-profit used interchangeably — and while they’re both focused on doing good, there is an important difference in Canada. Non-profits are organizations that operate for social or community benefit rather than profit, like a local sports club or neighbourhood association. Charities, like the YMCA, are a special type of non-profit that are registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and must follow specific guidelines to serve the public good — such as relieving poverty, advancing education, or promoting health and wellness. Charities can also issue official tax receipts for donations. So, when you give to a registered charity like the Y, you’re not just helping your community — you’re also supporting a mission that’s accountable, transparent, and built to create lasting impact.
Behind Every Program, a Purpose
When people walk through the doors of the YMCA, we want them to feel like they belong. For one family, it might mean access to affordable child care that allows them to get back on their feet. For a young person, it might be a summer camp experience that builds confidence and independence. For an older adult, it might be the gym community that brings connection and routine. These stories and impacts are why we’re here. And as a charity, we work hard to make sure cost is never the reason someone misses out.
In the past year alone, hundreds of individuals across Simcoe, Muskoka, and the District of Parry Sound received financial support to access YMCA programs and services — thanks to donations from people like you. Every time someone gives, it creates another opportunity for someone else to Shine. Together, with the help of generous supporters, we provided services to over 63,500 participants last year, including:
- Supporting 1,222 people with financial assistance to access the Y’s programs and services
- Teaching 8,529 children to swim through YMCA swim lessons
- Helping 17,730 members improve their health and wellness, and find belonging at our Health, Fitness & Aquatics centres
- Providing 4,811 children with a strong start and a bright future though our child care programs
How You Can Make a Difference
If you’re a YMCA participant, you’re already part of this movement. Every time you show up — to work out, drop off your child, volunteer, or cheer someone on — you’re supporting a place that exists to lift others up.
But if you’ve ever wondered how to do more, here are a few opportunities to consider:
- Give what you can – every donation, no matter the size, can help a child learn or support a neighbour in need.
- Share your story – let others know what the Y has meant to you or your family.
- Get involved – join our community events, volunteer, or become a monthly supporter.
A Stronger Community Starts with Us
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is here to ignite belonging. And we’re here because our community shows up for us, time and time again. So, as we honour charities and non-profits this season, we want to say thank you. Thank you to the donors, members, partners, staff, and volunteers who believe in what we do and make it all possible. Let’s keep building a community where everyone belongs and where everyone has the chance to Shine!
