Preparing for camp at Parry Sound Public School

Whether your child is an experienced camper or it is their first camp experience, it is always helpful to know what they can expect at your camp location this summer!

Camper Information

To ensure we can contact you if required, your YMCA Online Portal profile must be up to date with phone numbers and emergency contacts/authorized persons for pick up. Also, all required camp forms must be completed before your child participates.

YMCA Values

At YMCA Day Camp, our community is built upon the values of kindness, integrity, inclusiveness, respect and optimism. The YMCA values are guiding principles at the heart of everything we do. We ask that every member of our camp community embrace these values each day to create a sense of belonging and an enriching environment for everyone.

We look forward to a fantastic summer with your child!

Your child will swim every Wednesday at summer camp walking from Parry Sound Public School down to Waubuno Beach.

Please send your camper with their bathing suit, a towel, and preferably a bag for wet swim gear. Campers can bring their own goggles for swimming, but neither day camp nor the YMCA are liable for any lost items. Swim assessments will be completed by our Certified Lifeguards to determine swimmer abilities and access to the deep end of our pool. Lifejackets are available for those campers that require them.

Every Monday, campers will enjoy water games throughout the afternoon to help beat the summer heat! Please ensure your child brings an extra change of clothes or a bathing suit, along with a towel.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:30-1:45pm, we will walk to Williams Street Park to enjoy time on the playground, weather permitting and depending on the heat.

Every Wednesday, we will walk to Waubuno Beach at 9:00am Campers will have the opportunity to swim and enjoy the beach playground before returning to Parry Sound Public School by 2:45pm Please ensure your child comes prepared with appropriate swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water bottle, and any other beach essentials.

Day Camp staff work between the hours of 8am – 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Following provincial legislation and in keeping with our values, the YMCA is committed to supporting the wellbeing of employees. Our Disconnecting From Work Policy is intended to support work/life balance and staff wellbeing by ensuring that employees have the right to disconnect from their work outside of their scheduled hours.

If you have urgent concerns after hours, you can reach out to our Community Care Team between 6 am and 7 pm by phone, 705-792-7822 or email, [email protected].

All lost and found items will be held at camp until the end of each month. Where possible, found items will be displayed at sign out for parents and guardians to see.

In order to reduce lost and found we ask that you label all of your camper’s items. Custom labels can be ordered from: camps.mabelslabels.com. If you type ‘YMCA Simcoe/Muskoka Day Camp’ in the search bar before shopping a small portion of the cost will be donated to our campership fund.

Each day, our senior staff monitor weather conditions closely to prepare for a safe and enjoyable camp experience. During the summer, our region can experience a range of conditions, including thunderstorms, high temperatures, humidity, and occasional air quality concerns.

Inclement Weather (e.g., thunderstorms)

In the event of inclement weather, campers and staff will move to a safe, sheltered location. Depending on the camp site, this may include health and fitness centres, pavilions, or other indoor facilities. Campers will participate in alternative indoor programming until conditions improve. Outdoor activities such as swimming and boating will resume no sooner than 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.

Extreme Heat and Humidity

During periods of high heat and humidity, staff modify the daily schedule to prioritize camper safety and comfort. This may include:

  • Reducing strenuous activities
  • Scheduling more active programming during cooler parts of the day (typically mornings)
  • Incorporating water-based activities and games when possible
  • Campers are regularly reminded to drink plenty of fluids and take breaks as needed. Camps located at YMCA health, fitness, and aquatics centres often include daily afternoon swims, and indoor spaces at these locations are air-conditioned.
Poor Air Quality (e.g., wildfire smoke)

When air quality is impacted, such as during a special air quality statement, programming is adjusted to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity. Staff monitor campers for any signs of respiratory discomfort and respond accordingly.
We follow the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for our region and adjust programming based on its guidance and recommended health precautions.
