How the new YMCA in Barrie is funded

This project moves forward through a balanced, horizontal funding strategy: multiple partners advancing together to keep momentum strong.

Confirmed contributions include:

• Province of Ontario: Major infrastructure funding (approx. $29.9M).
• City of Barrie & County of Simcoe: Investments in youth housing and community wellness. ($7.5M)
• YMCA financing & asset contributions: Including proceeds from the sale of the former Barrie site. ($4.55M)
• Community donors & sponsors: Families, businesses, and service clubs stepping forward through 100 Reasons Y (including Napoleon, Barrie’s three Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Club, and Barrie Heritage Developments).

To date, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has secured approximately 80% of the project cost through government grants, fundraising, and the sale of the former Barrie property. The remaining portion will be raised through the 100 Reasons Y campaign.

Health Partnerships & Rehabilitation

In Simcoe County, 576 cases per 100,000 people are diagnosed with cancer, a rate higher than the national average, and cardio-pulmonary hospitalizations are 22.5% higher than the provincial average. These realities make accessible, community-based recovery programs more important than ever. In partnership with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the new YMCA in Barrie will include specialized spaces for cardiac and cancer rehabilitation, bridging the gap between clinical recovery and community wellness.

Youth Transitional Housing

For young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, the new YMCA in Barrie will be more than a gym; it will be home. Your support helps build 12 fully equipped, supportive housing units where youth aged 16–24 can find safety, stability, and the guidance they need to rebuild their lives. With 11% of Simcoe County’s homeless population made up of youth aged 16–25, this investment creates real, life-changing opportunities where they’re needed most.

Older-Adult Wellness & Community Connection

Simcoe County’s older-adult population is steadily growing, with 19.8% of residents now aged 65+. The new YMCA in Barrie will offer a welcoming, accessible space where older adults can stay active, independent, and socially connected. With group fitness classes, walking clubs, and wellness programs designed for healthy aging, the Y will be a place to move, laugh, and belong.

Family & Community Spaces

From the gymnasium to the child and youth program rooms, from accessible indoor playgrounds to welcoming community gathering spaces, your donation builds the places where belonging happens — where families connect, friendships form, and community thrives.

In Simcoe County, nearly one in four residents report feeling less connected to their community since the pandemic, and 43% of families say they struggle to find affordable, inclusive recreation options. The new YMCA in Barrie will help change that.

• Open updates: We’ll keep sharing funding progress, construction milestones, and community impact as we go. By the time the doors open in 2027, we will have shared with you how your donation has helped build this centre of community, brick by brick, story by story.

Community impact: what this will make possible

When the doors open at 535 Bayview Drive in 2027, the centre is projected to:

• Serve more than 8,000+ people every year, from families and youth to older adults and newcomers.
• Welcome over 1,000 children annually into swimming lessons and aquatics programs that teach life-saving water safety skills.
• Provide 12 youth housing units offering safety, stability, and support for young people ages 16-24.
• Engage more than 1000 staff and volunteers who will deliver health, fitness, and community programs daily.
• Host partnerships with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) to offer specialized cardiac and cancer rehabilitation programs, helping patients rebuild strength and confidence close to home.
• Create hundreds of indirect jobs during construction and operation, supporting local economic growth.
